This means that airlines only guarantee compensation in the event of missing crew, maintenance problems, etc. It does not apply to air traffic control or weather delays.

However, DOT does not specifically define what constitutes a “critical delay”, so this can be difficult to enforce.
When it comes to controllable delays, American Airlines makes various promises to its passengers, including accommodation and meal vouchers.
4. Your DOT dashboard outlines your rights
DOT maintains an up-to-date dashboard of 10 airlines, outlining your rights. It provides information about what American Airlines will offer if your flight is delayed or cancelled.

Flights from 1,500 to 3,500 kilometers |
|
Flight over 3,500 km |
Note that compensation can only be applied to controllable delays. Bad weather and air traffic problems are not eligible for refunds.
6. If you bump into someone, you are responsible.
Overbooking is a common practice of airlines. This means that airlines sell more seats than they have in the hope that some passengers will never arrive. But sometimes they all arrive, forcing airlines to bump passengers. They recruit volunteers first. If there aren’t enough volunteers, volunteers start beating people unconsciously.
Even if you accidentally fall out of a plane, you have rights. If you arrive within 1 hour of your original estimated arrival time, no compensation will be given. Beyond that, however, the numbers start increasing.
Depending on the final delay, the airline will be liable to pay 200% to 400% of the fare paid (note that there is a cap).
You will also be covered if you are involved in a collision while traveling on an award ticket. In this case, the compensation amount will be calculated based on the minimum cash, check or credit card amount charged for a ticket of the same class of service for the flight.
