Can you spare time to learn algorithmic trading outside of your work and personal life?
What if you are an IAS Officer? Is it possible?
Parag made this possible!
Government civil servant IAS officer. Parag Jain Nainutya from India has over 25 years of experience in 11 different roles dealing with the textile, tourism, maritime, marine and transportation industries, among others.
During his career, Parrag has led over 15,000 employees, processed US$600 million for high-profile companies, and turned loss-making businesses into highly profitable ones.
Pursuing his passion for the markets, he pursued the Executive Program in Algorithmic Trading (EPAT), earned a Certificate of Excellence, is now a proud EPAT graduate, and joins the global network of quant professionals. I’m here. But it wasn’t always easy.
Below are his journeys, challenges, his thoughts, and his experiences over the years. For more information, read on. This is the journey of Parag Jayin Nainutya.

Hi Parag, please tell us about yourself!
I Parag Jayin Nainutiafrom Uttar Pradesh, India. I He served as an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) Officer in 1996.
I am an electrician from IIT Delhi. He obtained a Diploma in Export Administration from the Institute of Export Administration of India (IIEIM), Bangalore and his LLB in Finance from ICFAI. We have completed EPAT certification for algorithmic trading and are also pursuing CFA.
I like sports like tennis, badminton, table tennis and swimming. I follow in the footsteps of the Honorary Prime Minister of India and practice yoga every day.
I’m an early riser, so I try to set aside time each day to read magazines about investing and the financial markets.
IAS is very competitive. What inspired you?
Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is India’s premier central civil servant. It is the administrative arm of the All India Service of the Government of India, together with the Indian Police Service and the Indian Forest Service.
I am an electrician from IIT, Delhi. But I think fate had other plans. My family’s motivation and support have allowed me to follow this path. They were my biggest inspiration.
I started preparing for all exams. First, I was selected for Indian Navy Service, Income Tax and Indian Administrative Service IAS. I started my career as SDM (Subdivisional District Magistrate) in Aurangabad where IAS officers start their journey.
What does an IAS Officer’s day look like?
A day as an IAS officer is filled with opportunities, challenges, and another level of exposure. The exposure and experience you get at a very tender age is amazing. It takes responsibility to make decisions during difficult times that can affect many people.
I was about 23 years old when I joined the company. The best thing about this service is that you can learn along the way and have amazing exposure.
My day ends with reading a few books. I do this every night without fail. Go to bed late, get enough sleep, wake up early, that’s all.
Engineering, IAS and now CFA – can you share your journey?
After graduating in Electrical Engineering from IIT, Delhi in 1993, he was selected in a campus interview for two of India’s most reputable firms, Schlumberger and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) in Pune.
Since 2007, I have also pursued my interest in investing and learning about the market. Some of my friends were interested in active trading and investing, which was also inspiring. So I started researching where to learn all this.
ICFAI offered me an LLB specializing in finance. So I enrolled there. However, since the ICFAI is unique to India, he later registered as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
After becoming Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of MAHATRANSCO, I was also able to make a significant contribution by using my background in electrical engineering to increase the organization’s output by about 60%.
Apart from that, I have been examining law and order as a local magistrate. I am the CEO of Zilla Parishad and have worked as MD for various companies. I have been to the maritime sector, the tourism sector, social welfare and rural development. I was the mayor of the municipality. And now I am interested in transportation, ports and information technology.
I have processed funds in the $600 million range. I have led a team of over 15000 people. He turned a $40 million company loss into a $1.2 million profit. Streamline processes, reduce costs, and right-size your organization.
I am also the President of the IIT Bombay Alumni Association (IITBAA). Overall it’s been a great trip for me over the last few years.
Have you always been interested in the world of finance and trading?
My interest in finance started in 2004 when I started trading and investing with friends. After gaining some knowledge, I started learning about investing, trading techniques and studying market patterns.
I primarily trade stocks and mutual funds, but I also experiment with commodities. Now that I’ve done EPAT, I’m considering trading other asset classes as well.
I am also on the board of the ‘Innovative Society’ of the Government of Maharashtra. The commission competes among start-ups in education, health, agriculture and finance. Meanwhile, a colleague from IITD introduced me to the concept of high-frequency trading and algorithmic trading.
In my time, I coded in Pascal and C++. I found it very interesting how machines can learn and perform intelligent tasks through a few codes and commands. So when I learned that algorithmic trading involves coding in Python, I was intrigued.
Some time later, one of my colleagues shared an email about an algorithmic trading program. And then came across his EPAT on QuantInsti. I did some research on it.
The syllabus covered by EPAT was really great. It had everything covered from the beginning. And it teaches you how to expand yourself to fit all of this. And I just asked for it.
What was your experience learning algo trading like?
Congratulations, QuantInsti. EPAT has one of the most concise and comprehensive courses I have ever found. As I expected, I think you achieved more than 100% results.
Also, my support manager, Mr. Niraj, was there to guide me through and push me when I was behind schedule. He was available whenever we needed him.
Another great feature is that there is so much material available even after completing the EPAT. I just asked you to show me your trading platform, so Niraj stepped forward again to pass on the knowledge. I think this course deserves praise. I hope the same trend continues.
Pursuing algorithmic trading requires a very basic understanding of this, a little knowledge of coding and statistics, and a flair for programming languages. A background in engineering, statistics and most recently a CFA helped.
I quit programming a long time ago, so Python was a bit difficult at first. So, I was a little scared. But actually, a special session was held for me to learn Python. Much of the code has already been provided to students. It helped me overcome my fear of programming.
The backtesting platform “Blueshift” is great. The entire faculty, the website, the portal, the progress charts to check the status, the additional materials – all very good. Someone is always on call and ready to help.
Surprisingly, every time I log into the portal, I see updates, lectures, and study material for all these modules. Information about modules and features will continue to be updated, and you will have access to course content for life. This is great.
I had a great trip while taking the EPAT course.
What are your thoughts on the growth of finance and trade in India?
Our economy is blossoming rapidly. From an economy of 3 trillion, within 5 years he will have an economy of 5 trillion. Our GDP is great compared to other countries, specially developed and developing countries.
Indians are good with numbers. We are multitasking people and it won’t be long before we are on top of the world. It’s time for more Warren Buffett from India.
In addition, Gujarat has a gift city, has courses like EPAT, and these days people are actively participating in financial markets and contributing to the economy and technology industry. Because these sources are easily accessible online.
Over the past 4-5 years, we have registered over 100 million people willing to participate in equity and mutual fund investments through various websites.
After 15 to 20 years of working with the most reputable international banks such as JP Morgan, Standard Chartered and Citibank, many of my IIT batchmates are now starting startups.
I think India will join the 5 trillion club soon. We live in amazing times and it is a pleasure to see how fast our economy is growing.
what comes next?
In order to learn more about the market, we plan to consolidate the knowledge gained through EPAT and other platforms. I think I’ve done a lot of active investment trading in 10-12 years.Hedge funds have also had a strong influence on me. I would like to start and manage a hedge fund one day.
I have written some of the courses myself. It is currently in the testing stage. I just started using Tradingview and am implementing and practicing what I learned in EPAT. I would like to do my own backtesting, but I find it very interesting to use the Blueshift platform.
What is the secret of your success?
Focus, clarity, dedication and hard work are the mantras I follow. There is no alternative to achieving long-term success.
You can’t cover everything under the sun, so you need to be clear in your actions. As far as personal characteristics are concerned, transparency and honesty are two important factors in the long run. So if you have or develop these traits, your journey will be more successful and enjoyable.
What is your message to those who want to grow in their profession and algorithmic trading?
There are many sources and ingredients to choose from. However, participation in EPAT is highly recommended. This is one of the best courses I’ve come across on algorithmic trading.
Algorithmic trading has made me a more innovative thinker, leading to the development of profitable business ventures. Don’t give up, believe in yourself and keep trying.
