We spoke with Qiong Son, Global Vice President of TE’s Automotive E-mobility business. She oversees the automotive e-mobility product portfolio, technology strategy and future solutions. Read on to discover what’s next for TE’s future of e-mobility.
What makes the future of electric mobility so exciting in your opinion?
Electric vehicles are no longer a niche option for early adopters. Electric vehicles are the future of mobility. EVs are already one of the fastest growing segments of the automotive market, with global sales set to double his by 2021. It’s possible that governments and automakers will make EVs 40%, 50%, or even his 100% of new car sales within the next 10-15 years.

One of the key challenges hindering the adoption of e-mobility solutions is the ability to charge EVs. How is TE addressing this challenge?
The challenge for EV designers is to ensure vehicles can meet the challenges of ultra-fast charging. From charging inlets to connectors, wiring, and battery contactors, all components must be designed to handle the high temperatures associated with high voltage fast charging.
TE engineers have launched a high performance charging inlet capable of delivering 350 kilowatts of power at 500 amps. Currently working on a super high power DC charging inlet that can deliver 640 kilowatts of power, and in about 10 minutes he can charge a battery for a 200 mile drive.
For example, TE’s new tender The EV charging inlet’s surface plating technology uses an innovative combination of silver and graphite, which is lubricated by embedded graphite particles for strong conductive performance. This state-of-the-art contact plating provides excellent wear resistance and continuous high performance charging throughout the life of the vehicle.

Staying with charging and charging infrastructure, energy storage, especially batteries, still struggle to perform and sustain at the level of consumer expectations. What is in TE’s pipeline to overcome this bottleneck?
Battery life depends on several subsystems and components within the vehicle. To support longer life, batteries must be safely switched on and off during normal vehicle operating modes and protected from potentially damaging abnormal conditions.
TE’s high voltage contactors are an integral part of this safety system, providing a method to switch batteries or completely shut down batteries in the event of a short circuit or excessive current load. Additionally, these contactors, combined with low resistance terminations to avoid power loss, and battery management systems to prevent overheating of the battery pack keep the battery running for the life of the vehicle.
Finally, what are TE’s key priorities and/or areas of focus to power and build the future of electric mobility?
As EV manufacturers race to develop more powerful and efficient vehicles, they must continue to focus on environmental sustainability, another major consideration for EV drivers. TE is contributing to this effort with innovations such as: green silver Contact surface technology for high voltage EV connectors.
By selectively applying silver to a limited portion of the connection surface, green silver provides the same electrical performance and enhanced vibration and heat resistance required for EV powertrains while using less precious metal than traditional connectors. In addition, the unique non-galvanic dry plating process does not use any harmful substances, reduces his CO2 emissions in manufacturing by 35% and fresh water consumption by 99%.
