A financial statement is a great tool for listing all your assets and accounts. As you look through your list, ask yourself if something is missing. If you’ve held multiple jobs, moved residences, or inherited a property, it’s worth taking a look to see if there are assets you didn’t realize you had. .
- Search for state unclaimed properties:
Check the official website for your state’s unclaimed property program. To find it, search the internet by entering your state and “unclaimed property” or National Unclaimed Property Managers Association It will take you to your state site. Here you can search for unclaimed funds using your name or the name of a deceased family member.

If you’ve worked for multiple employers throughout your career, you may be unaware or forget about your retirement benefits and pensions at your previous job. Search the following sites:
Some organizations claim to pay a fee to help find unclaimed money, but please don’t. These sites listed are mostly government sites, are free to use, and all you need to do is submit documents proving that the money is yours. It’s so nice to hear back from customers who have found an annuity at their old job or received a check from a forgotten store credit. It’s usually not a huge amount of money, but see if there’s one that works for you, whether it’s the equivalent of a cup of coffee or eating out.
