If you attended a for-profit college and were mistakenly admitted, you may be eligible for for-profit student loan forgiveness options such as Borrower Defense Reimbursement. Over the past few years, over $1 billion in student loan debt has been forgiven for students who attended for-profit colleges and other schools that could mislead students.
Reasons for student loan forgiveness include defending the borrower against repayment claims, school closures, and other lawsuits.
The Biden administration has forgiven the largest amount of student loan debt of any president in history, helping more than 200,000 borrowers in several recent announcements.
However, it can be difficult to determine if you are eligible. Below is a list of colleges eligible for student loan forgiveness under the borrower’s defense against repayment, the latest Sweet v. Cardona settlement, or other loan cancellation agreements. This guide is also available at How to get loan help if you get scammed out of college.
Editor’s Note: This article has been updated to reflect that not all schools on this list are for-profit. Some schools were previously for-profit, but have since changed their status to non-profit.
Borrower Defense Student Loan Forgiveness List
There are over 155 schools and colleges. potentially You can qualify for student loan forgiveness under various plans and settlements. The most recent is the proposed settlement of Sweet v. Cardona. However, many of the “owner” names do not match the university name. We are working to include individual school names on this list.
Note: Not all students in all grades/schools can qualify. Still, the criteria for either defending the debtor or closing the school must be met. However, some schools cover all borrowers.
For example, the University of Corinth entered into a settlement, but the actual school name was Everest, Wyotech, etc. As such, borrowers may not know if they are eligible for the program.
In the list below, we provide the parent company name followed by a list of partner schools. Some of these universities were previously for-profit, but have since been converted to non-profit institutions.
Disclaimer: Some of the schools on this list were formerly for-profit schools but have since changed to non-profit schools. It may also have previously operated under a different parent company or under a different name.Schools currently considered non-profit are indicated with an asterisk

How to get loan forgiveness
There are two main programs that can help here. Borrower defense against repayment
Provides for cancellation of a borrower’s federal student loans if the college violates federal or state law or makes a material misrepresentation with respect to the borrower’s student loans or educational services paid for the use of student loans. I’m here. If the borrower qualifies for the borrower’s defense to forgiveness, the borrower’s federal student loan will be canceled and all previous payments will be refunded to the borrower. IMPORTANT NOTES ON THE TIMING OF THE FIRST SETTLEMENT TO RETURN FOR BORROWER DEFENSE:
If the settlement is approved, it will apply not only to borrowers who filed claims before June 22, but also to borrowers who filed claims after June 22 before the court approved the settlement. It will be. A public hearing is scheduled for July 28. Among other things, the proposed settlement provides that these borrowers will have three years to process their applications, or the loan will be automatically forgiven in full. Closed School Expulsion: A student may be eligible for a scholarship if the university closes while the student is in school, or if the university closes within 180 days of the student’s withdrawal. Closed school discharge
If you are unable to complete your education through teachout or transfer of credits to another school, your federal student loan will be waived. These loan forgiveness programs are federal student loans ( Recent payment
in cooperation with the Ministry of Education). There is no specific student loan forgiveness program that will help you if you have private student loans. However, there have been various lawsuits and settlements seeking the dismissal of some private loans related to these schools. recently, Navient agreed
Forgive $1.7 billion in private student loans for 66,000 borrowers who dropped out of for-profit colleges. Previously, Corinthians University agreed to allow Genesis private loans to school-going borrowers.
Legal updates
On November 17, 2022, the judge overseeing the case approved the settlement agreement. But a group representing the school said it would appeal the case. As such, the agreement is likely to be put on hold until the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals hears the case.
what next
If you think you are eligible, you should have been (or will be) notified by your loan servicer. However, if your contact information hasn’t been updated, it may not. Therefore, an application for forgiveness in defense of the borrower must be submitted to the following address:studentaid.gov/borrower-defense/
. Notice:
There are many scams that use these school names to get you paid to help process your student loan forgiveness application. You don’t have to pay anything. You can do it all for free via StudentAid.gov (the official government website). See our list of common student loan scams here.
