Following its commitment to combat climate change, renewable energy leader Iberdrola is back with a successful PERSEO start-up challenge to drive the energy transition and the decarbonization and electrification of the economy. In addition, Iberdrola is committed to protecting and acting on nature and is strengthening its commitment. Biodiversity Plan 2030The Plan sets out the mechanisms to reach the ambitious goal of having a net positive impact on biodiversity by 2030. Iberdrola Startup Challenge: Oxygenation of Turbinated Water Streams at a hydroelectric power plant.
Turbine Water Flow Iberdrola Oxygenation Startup Challenge Background
Iberdrola’s commitment to decarbonizing the environment and society includes maximizing renewable energy generation and expanding the energy use of water bodies. Today, Iberdrola has over 10,000 MW of hydropower capacity and 4,500 MW of pumping capacity.
The company’s hydroelectric facilities are located in river basins, most of which have defined environmental requirements for each water body that must be complied with.
One of the requirements of ecosystem flow is to maintain dissolved oxygen levels in water to parameters that maintain essential processes of healthy river ecosystems upon which protected species and habitats depend, and to maintain good water body health. It is to ensure ecological conditions.
Are you developing a solution to increase dissolved oxygen in hydroelectric water streams?
During certain periods of the year, water bodies at the level of some plant intake structures do not reach the oxygenation values required for restoration. This can hinder turbination and result in a situation where renewable energy is not available.
Iberdrola is looking for a solution for power plant drainage. Either it is employed in the turbine drainage itself or it is already employed in the river bed.
- Suitable for a wide range of flow rates As far as possible from anoxia.
- Maximize dissolved oxygen concentration to the values normally required in waterways.
- that is Resistant to sudden changes in flow rate when the dam overflows.
- Enabling use of renewable energy With a constant stream of water.
What are the benefits of winning the Iberdrola Oxygenation of Turbined Water Flows Startup Challenge?
Prizes consist of signing collaboration and proof-of-concept agreements with PERSEO and/or other relevant Iberdrola group companies. Perseo and/or its affiliates will:
- Assume the cost of collaboration and proof of concept.
- We will provide the winner with the technical support necessary to test the proposed solution and provide access to equipment and appliances.
- Access to infrastructure, tech sites and co-working areas.
- We will provide the winner with a real environment and real data to test the solution.
If the assay or proof of concept is satisfactory, Perseo and/or its affiliates may offer the opportunity to extend the solution by commercial agreement, either directly or indirectly through another Iberdrola group company.
In addition, PERSEO will consider investing in participating companies and/or challenge winners.
Ready to extend your solution with Iberdrola?
Through its PERSEO start-up program, Iberdrola is looking for innovative start-ups to develop systems to increase the concentration of dissolved oxygen in hydroelectric plant wastewater. Especially when the water treated by the turbine does not reach the required value in the river.
Proposals fall into two categories where Iberdrola can define base cases to standardize the evaluation of proposals.
- Category A: action in the turbine circuit
- Category B: Actions in spillways and downstream channels
Iberdrola’s team of renewable energy experts take responsibility for choosing the innovative solutions that best solve the problem.
Key Dates for Turbine Water Flow Oxygenation Startup Challenge
The deadline for submission of applications for the challenge is May 14, 2023.
Iberdrola will then evaluate the applications received and announce the winner of the challenge by the end of July 2023. The evaluation criteria are based, among other factors, on:
- Solution maturity, reliability and durability
- Ease of installation and maintenance
- Investment and operating costs
- Scalability of solutions for hydropower plants
