Like other battery materials that power electric vehicles, lithium continues to attract investor attention.
At Fast Market’s latest lithium supply and battery materials conference, Investing News Network interviewed House Mountain Partners’ Chris Berry to discuss what’s happening in the lithium space.
“There are more people who understand or are beginning to understand the many challenges of building not just domestic supply chains, but more regionalized supply chain structures. It takes a lot of time,” Berry said beside the show with record attendance.
Commenting on lithium price trends, Berry said price volatility will continue over the next decade, not just for lithium but for many other battery materials as well.
“This obviously has implications depending on where you are in the supply chain, whether you are a miner or a cathode manufacturer or an OEM,” he said. “I think the market will ultimately decide what is sustainable (in terms of price)…I think the downside is very limited. The US dollar era is old history.”
Berry, the organizer, power current podcastalso shared thoughts on the impact of the U.S. Inflation Restriction Act (IRA).
“The IRA is a highly economically beneficial bill for building a battery infrastructure, whether for recycling, cathodes, anodes, or cell manufacturing in the United States,” he said. “If there is a problem or limitation with the IRA, it is that it does not really address the permitting issue.
The energy transition is impossible without extraction, but what can the industry do to attract investment?
“I believe mining businesses must deliver on time and on budget, regardless of jurisdiction, regardless of metals, regardless of various factors,” Berry said during the conversation. “I think one of the ways we can do that is by leveraging technology.”
