Alphabet’s experimental drone delivery service, Wing, has partnered with DoorDash to expand its business from grocery delivery for supermarkets in Queensland to meal delivery.
The two tech companies have partnered with real estate giant Mirvac to launch drone-delivered meals from food retailers who have signed up for DoorDash from the Orion Springfield Central shopping center in Ipswich. This option is called “DoorDash Air” and includes popular mall chain Sushi Hub.
Late last year, Wing began testing grocery delivery from Coles on the Gold Coast. The drone used has a wingspan of 1.3 meters, weighs about 5 kg and travels at about 110 km/h.
After five years of development, the Google brothers business launched in Australia in 2019 as the first location to test the feasibility of commercial drone deliveries. The two primary trial sites are Canberra and Logan in Queensland, serving coffee, fast food and roast his chicken.
The new delivery business is backed by the Ipswich City Council. Ipswich is the fastest growing city in the state, with population projected to exceed 453,000 by 2041.
Historically, Wing has offered direct delivery services to residential and business customers, but is now expanding its delivery options by strengthening partnerships with real estate and logistics businesses, as well as other drone deliveries available in urban areas. We are looking for areas with high demand.
Wing Australia’s MD Simon Rossi says on-demand drone delivery can help address the challenges of last-mile delivery of costly, lightweight goods.
“It will reduce road congestion and emissions while creating new economic opportunities for retailers and communities,” he said.
